Jazz on tap for historical society fund-raiser

Celebrate spring with the Ed Spargo Band and the MSD Jazz Quintet at the Old Colony House on Washington Square in Newport on Saturday, April 21 from 7 to 11 p.m. It's 'Jazz at the Old Colony House', a fund-raiser for the benefit of the Newport Historical Society and First Night Newport, sponsored by BankNewport.

Newport's own MSD Jazz Quintet performs the music of the Yellowjackets, Miles Davis, the Pat Metheny Group, Michael Brecker, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, and a number of original compositions.

Boston-area bassist and composer Ed Spargo and his band headline the event. Spargo has just released a compelling new CD entitled 'Playroom'. This CD features an upbeat party mix of jazz, latin and funk music that chronicles Ed's life with his son Max. It's an artful mix of smooth jazz at its best. In addition to Ed Spargo on bass, the band features drummer Brendan Byrnes, pianist and keyboardist Steve Hunt, saxophonist Dino Govoni and percussionist John LaMoia.

The ticket price includes live music, refreshments and valet parking. Tickets, which are limited, are available in advance at the Newport Historical Society offices at 82 Touro Street in Newport for $75 each, or by calling 846-0813. There will be general admission seating on a first-come, first-serve basis. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

The food and beverage sponsors are Newport Chocolates, Blackstone Catering and Scharffenberger Brut Champagne.
