URI offers summer garden classes
      Amateur gardeners interested in learning more about their hobby are invited to participate in the third Summer Gardening School sponsored by the University of Rhode Island Cooperative Extension. This informal series of nine bi-weekly sessions, including tours of the URI Botanical Garden, will be held on Tuesday evenings from June 5 to Aug. 21. All sessions will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Handbell ringers at library
      The Friends of the Jamestown Library are proud to present "Shoreline Ringers" on Sunday, May 20, at 3 p.m. in the library meeting hall. Shoreline Ringers, Inc. is a community handbell choir, formed as a Connecticut non-profit corporation in September 2006.

Blood drive May 20
      The island's veterans groups will sponsor a blood drive on Sunday, May 20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Holy Ghost Hall. The Arnold Zwier Post 22 of the American Legion and Memorial Post 9447 of the VFW will host the event in the Portuguese American Citizens' Club. Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds and be in good health.

Blood pressure checks at library.
      The Visiting Nurse Services will hold free blood pressure clinics the first Thursday of the month from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Jamestown library. The first clinic will be on Thursday, June 5, at 1 p.m. in the Museum room. For more information, call 423- 7280.

Sign kids up for summer fun at Fort Getty playground
      The Jamestown Parks and Recreation Department has begun registrations for its Summer Playground Program at Ft. Getty this summer. The program runs from 9 a.m. to noon, with the option of staying until 3 or 4 p.m. The program is scheduled to run from Monday, June 25 to Friday, August, 17.

Wickford gallery to hold photo show
      The Wickford Art Association will hold their Annual Open Juried Photography Show from May 18 to June 7. The opening reception will be held on Sunday, May 20, from 1 to 3 p.m. The gallery is wheelchair accessible and hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday noon to 3 p.m.

      The Potter League for Animals is holding a Potter Pet University class on Thursday, May 17, at Middletown Baptist Church, 1818 West Main Rd. in Middletown. The presentation will include an exclusive viewing of the award winning documentary "Prison Pups" by Alice D. Bouvrie. Peter Manning will discuss N.E.A.D.

Buy your summer beach stickers now
      Resident beach stickers will be on sale beginning today, May 10 at the recreation center, 41 Conanicus Ave. on weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon. The stickers will be sold at Fort Getty beginning May 17, from Mondays to Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost of each sticker, which provides seasonal parking at both Mackerel Cove Beach and Ft. Getty Park, is $15.

Spring festival at URI this weekend
      The University of Rhode Island will host its fifth annual East Farm Spring Festival Saturday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The festival will include everything from weeds to ticks, from flowers to cuddly animals, from environmental dos to ecological don'ts.

Spring bird count this weekend
      The 23rd Annual Conanicut Island Spring Bird Count will be held this Saturday, May 12. Interested birders should meet at the Jamestown police station conference room at 6:30 a.m. with binoculars, field guides and appropriate hiking/ walking shoes. The group will be divided into four groups to cover the island in search of as many different bird species as possible.

Garden club plans May plant sale
      With nine days left until their May Plant Sale, the Quononoquott Garden Club members are busy potting and digging perennials for the big fund-raising event. On May 14, the club members will meet at Jill Meyer's home for pricing and prepping the plants. A business meeting will be held prior to plant preparation.

Sheep shearing day this Saturday
      Celebrate spring at Watson Farm's annual Sheep Shearing Day to be held this Saturday, May 12, from noon to 4 p.m. Historic New England invites the public to this special pre-season Open Farm Day at Watson Farm. It will be a great opportunity to watch shearer Lara Sullivan as she removes the fleece from sheep in the farm flock. Many young lambs and baby chicks await visitors in the barnyard.
