Athletes have opportunities to practice this summer

By Adrienne Downing

School may be out for the summer, but for fall athletes, summer is an ideal time to work on their skills and stay in shape. Several sports teams at North Kingstown High School have posted their captain's practice schedules for the summer. The practices are an excellent way for incoming freshman and newcomers to get acquainted with their team before school starts in the fall. Practices are student run and are not mandatory.

Girls' soccer will host two practices a week, starting this Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at Wilson Park.

"We will decide on Sunday which day of the week we want the second practice to be," Captain Caitie Kelly said. "Even if girls are not sure if they are going to try out for the team, we encourage everyone to come to the practices because it is a great way to meet people and prepare for the season."

For more information or questions, email Kelly at ckelly2126@ aol.com, or Lexi Bottomly at lexable27@ yahoo.com.

The boys' soccer team will hold their practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Wilson Park, starting July 10.

Two of the team's captains, Brett Uttley and Ben Nadeau, are from Jamestown. For more information, email Uttley at bkuttley@ cox.net.

The weight room will be open Mondays through Thursdays from 6 to 9 a.m. for football players starting on July 2. Offensive practice will take place on Mondays from 6 to 7:30 p.m., through Aug. 6. Defensive practice will be held on Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. starting July 11. NK football camp will run from 3:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 20, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Saturday, July 21, and 12 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 22.

Testing and equipment day will be Aug. 12, starting at 8 a.m. Double practice sessions will be held Aug. 13 through 17, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a single session practice from 7 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18 and from 3 to 6 p.m. on Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 20 to 22.

For more information on the football practices, contact coach Keith Kenyon in the athletic directors office at 268-6281.

The boys' and girls' cross-country teams will hold their practices together this summer.

Group runs are scheduled for Mondays at Mackerel Cove at 5:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 6:15 p.m. at the URI Run for Fun series at Keaney Gym on the URI campus. Thursdays' run will be at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery on Route 2 in Exeter at 5:30 p.m. and the Saturday runs will take place at Goddard Park, near the first bathroom, at 8 a.m.

"All family members are invited to join us for a walk or run during these times," boys' coach Paul Tetreault said.

For more information on the cross-country programs, contact Tetreault at 295-1805 or girls' coach Keven O'Neil at 294-6086.

Once the other fall teams have solidified their summer schedules, they will be posted online at www. nksd.net/schools/nkhs/departments/ athletics.
