J/22 racing season to start

Bad News, skippered by Michael Marshall, prepares to round Butterball as Machbuster raises her spinnaker, in last year's Fleet 12 action. In a break from tradition, Fleet 12 will begin its Sunday race series next Saturday, June 30.

The onetime switch was made in anticipation of an unusually high level of boat traffic on the lower bay racecourse July 1, due to the Tall Ships parade of sail. The Fleet 12 J/22 Sunday Series is hosted by the Conanicut Yacht Club, but is open to all J/22's, including Sail Newport boats. This year's series is scheduled for the following dates: June 30, July 8, 22, and 29; and August 5,12,19, and 26. All participants are also encouraged to enter the Newport Regatta on July 14 and 15, and CYC's Around the Island Race on Labor Day weekend, but these events will not count toward the season championship.

The Fleet 12 J/22 Sunday Series offers a rare combination of family friendly, Corinthian yacht racing, where all the boats have a real chance to win and are guaranteed to have a good time trying. It is a spinnaker series, so the racing is genuine. Starts are near Special Mark 3 between CYC and the bridge at 1:30 p.m. There is no registration fee. Race instructions are available on the CYC website, www. conanicutyachtclub.org.

Last year's series was won by Louis Mariorenzi and his Blues eRacer team, the fourth different winner in as many years. Anyone with a J/22 can join in the fun. Spectators are invited to keep an eye out for the colorful fleet on Sunday afternoons this summer.
