Be a farm volunteer
      New volunteers are always needed and welcome at the Jamestown Community Farm at the corner of Eldred Avenue and East Shore Road. Volunteers can be any age and can work as long or as little as they want. Hours are Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon, and Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 to sunset.

Fund gives $4,800 to island groups
      Jamestown youth will attend a Save the Bay camp this summer, a new emergency information card system will be implemented, and Meals on Wheels will deliver meals to Jamestown seniors, thanks to grants made recently by the Jamestown Community Fund.

Have cake for Jones' birthday
      The Portsmouth Historical Society and the U.S. Navy will hold a birthday party in honor of John Paul Jones, who lived in Portsmouth in 1777. The party is Sunday, July 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the John Paul Jones House and Gardens at the corner of Middle and State streets.

Frustrated tree committee chair announces resignation
      Tree committee chairwoman Edwina Cloherty announced her resignation from the committee at their June 19 monthly meeting. Cloherty said the meeting would be her last. Cloherty said she was resigning because she is frustrated with the relationship between the Tree Committee and the Town Council and other officials.

      Tucker Neale of Jamestown was named to the dean's list at the Maine Maritime Academy for the spring semester. Neale, a member of the class of 2008, is majoring in small vessel operations

Library's book sale begins July 5
      The annual book sale at the Jamestown Library will open this year on Thursday, July 5 at 7 p.m. with a paid preview night. Some little used and much loved volumes will be available at great prices. The admission will be free for paid-up members of the Friends of the Library or $10 for non-members. The sale will continue until Saturday, July 21 at 2 p.m.

Crime-fighting talk for teens
      "You Never Know," this year's Newport Public Library Teen Summer Reading Program, will begin Monday, July 2, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the library's program room with a free pizza party and an exciting demonstration of crime-solving techniques by a forensic expert from the Rhode Island Crime Lab.

Riders scale Newport bridge to raise funds for MS

Viewing the parade
      On Sunday, July 1, Tall Ships will be commencing with the lead ship passing Castle Hill heading North at 12:30 p.m . The ships will continue North up the Narragansett Bay, around Gould Island, then South and out to sea. The first ship completes the Parade of Sail circuit at 3:30 p.m.

Barber takes four at flower show
      Quononoquott Garden Club member and Jamestown artist, Jillian Barber, came away with four awards from last weekend's Newport Flower Show, "Sea Fever: A Salute to the Tall Ships." The three-day event was held at Rosecliff mansion on Bellevue Avenue.

The old Jamestown Bridge lives on in museum
      The Jamestown Historical Society Museum at 92 Narragansett Ave. re-opens for the summer on Saturday, June 30. This season is special, as the museum building boasts interior restorations that reflect its late 19th century origin and protect local antiquities in a climate-controlled atmosphere.

Commission approves additional building for Randall Art Gallery lot
      The Planning Commission approved a revised land development project on Narragansett Avenue, on the site of the Randall Art Gallery. The gallery building remains on the main avenue in the new conception. The vote was 5 to 2 at their June 20 meeting.

Teen activities planned
      The Teen Council meets at the recreation center every Wednesday from 3 to 4 p.m. Mondays are girl's softball pick-up nights from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Lawn Avenue fields. Softball is for girls entering grade 5 and up. Friends and family are welcome.

      The Tall Ships are here! These spectacular vessels will be open to the public today through Saturday in Newport harbor. Parking in Newport will be a nightmare, so what is the best way to get there? Without doubt, the best deal for islanders is to ride the Jamestown to Newport Ferry, which leaves Jamestown from East Ferry.
