Many fun things to do at the library
Here are a few ideas to use when planning children's activities.
Tall Ships passport
Before families go for a visit on the Tall Ships, which will be visiting Newport from June 27 to July 1, go to the library and pick up a Tall Ships Souvenir Passport from the children's room. The passports are full of fun facts, nautical terminology, pirate speak, and detailed information about the ships themselves. The last two pages are empty so children may take notes and collect autographs. Supplies are limited, so get one early.
Kid's book club
The fourth and fifth grade book club will be meeting on Thursday, June 28, at 7 p.m. in the museum room to discuss the book, "Weetamoo: Heart of the Pocassets," by Patricia Clark Smith.
In her first book for The Royal Diaries, the author, who is part Micmac Indian, relates the 17thcentury story of Weetamoo, who is destined to succeed her father as Sachem (Chief) of the Pocasset tribe in Massachusetts.
Call or visit the library to reserve a copy of the book. Books may also be reserved online through the website, www.jamestownri. com/library/.
All children entering grades 4 and 5 in the fall are welcome to join.
Pajama storytimes, for children ages 4 years and over, will take place on Tuesdays at 7 p.m., through Aug. 14 at the library.
Registration is not necessary for these free half-hour programs, which will feature guest readers from the community, as well as library staff members.
Creative writing The library will be taking registrations beginning Monday, July 2, for a creative writing class offered for children entering grades 2 through 4 in September.
Kelly Easton, a Jamestown resident and an award-winning author, will be the instructor for the four-week class, which will meet weekly, July 10 to July 31 from 3 to 4:15 p.m.
Registration for this free class, which is sponsored by the Friends of Jamestown Philomenian Library, is limited to 15 children. Visit the library or call 423-7280 to register.
