Program provides a way to volunteer

The Friendly Visitor Program of Child & Family matches volunteers with elders who are homebound and would like someone to visit them on a regular basis. Typically volunteers play cards, read, and in some cases, take the elder for a ride or a meal in a restaurant. The most important thing is that the volunteer be a good listener.

There are currently four elders waiting for a volunteer, three women in the Newport area and a man in Tiverton. One woman is very interested in the arts and movies, another would like to have someone read the Bible to her and the third needs a very patient and understanding volunteer. The man in Tiverton is interested in baseball, hunting, chess and pool. He would also like to get out for a ride.

Friendly visitors need to be available for a least a year and for several hours weekly with allowances for vacations, etc. Volunteers will be interviewed and will need a background check. Before making a final commitment, the elder and volunteer will be introduced to each other to ensure compatibility.
