This letter was sent to Fire Chief James R. Bryer, Jr. and copied to the Jamestown Press.
On July 3, 2007 this department received a call reporting a pier fire at the Mount Hope Marine Terminal in Portsmouth. The first arriving companies observed heavy fire on the pier that had extended to a crane on the dock and was threatening a 500-gallon tank of diesel fuel. The decision was made to call for mutual aid companies to respond to the scene immediately. Your department responded with a Marine Unit. Your Marine Unit was deployed and we were able to affect an attack on the fire from beneath the pier. While the loss was substantial, we were able to save nearly a million dollars worth of property due to the teamwork that was exhibited by all involved.
Once again the assistance and professionalism displayed by you and your firefighters proved invaluable, you are truly an asset to the Town of Jamestown and the fire service. I would like to thank you, your department, your dispatchers, and the men who responded to the incident. Without all of your help I am sure this incident would have had a very different outcome. Thank you again and know we stand ready to assist your department in any way needed.
Jeffrey P. Lynch Chief, Portsmouth
