Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis has honored a Jamestown student with the 2007 State High School Civic Leadership Award, which is given annually to seniors who make outstanding contributions to civic and community affairs.
This year's 2007 State High School Civic Leadership Award winner from Jamestown is Michael Marshall of North Kingstown High School.
"This award recognizes students who show an understanding of the importance civic duty has in a democratic society," Mollis said. "These students take the principles of civics and put them into action through their community and civic involvement, as well as their personal academic success."
Secretary of State Mollis asked high schools around the state to select one male and one female member of the senior class who best met the ideals of the award: civic contributions made within the school or community, government interest, leadership ability and academic achievement.
Secretary of State Mollis oversees many aspects of federal, state and municipal elections held in Rhode Island. His office also publishes guidebooks that include important dates in the election cycle and outline how to run for office and register to vote.
