Horsehead event a great success!
As the 450 people who attended know, a wonderful party was held at Horsehead on July 28. Josy and Harry Wright hosted a fundraiser for the Jamestown Historical Society Capital Campaign in a location and on an evening that made the glamorous parties in the movies seem insipid.

Thanks to many for a great season
As many readers saw, last week's edition of the Press featured a photo of our nine-year old tournament team which recently participated in the Cal Ripken State Tournament. With that, we "officially" conclude another great season of Jamestown baseball.

Why I gave to save the farms
As a committed lover of this wonderful island, I have been aware of the challenge we face in preserving the absolutely marvelous vistas at the center of it all. My wife, Rita, and I have tried to respond to the case made by Quentin Anthony and Arthur Milot.

EZPass not a wise choice
I'm writing in reaction to the Aug. 2 article titled, "Motorists may find bridge crossing easier some day." First, the article's title is misleading because currently I don't think anyone finds crossing the Pell Bridge difficult at all.

Support for barn at Taylor Point
I would like to voice my support for the new highway barn at the bridge authority land. Yes, I live in the North End, so feel free to label me as you wish, but the fact remains that the new location makes the most sense.

Misinformation on barn sites
Last week, in his letter to the editor, Dennis Webster stated, "there seems to be a lot of false information going around about the highway garage." I totally agree. Webster states that half the roads in Jamestown are in the north end therefore, there is no advantage to locating a highway garage in the center of the island.

An outrageous financial folly
The highway barn would have to be squeezed into Taylor Point. The town would have to buy 6,000 square feet of land from the bridge authority for $97,500. That's paying $700,000 per acre. That's a lot to pay for land, especially land with lead-contamination problems.

Enough already, approve the site
As I understand it, there is a possibility that the development of Lot 47 could contaminate people's wells. This is their only source of water and I haven't heard any contingency plans should this happen. It wouldn't matter what this referendum was concerning- as a voter I would have to vote "no" on something that could affect people's wells.

Union supports north end site
This is an open letter to the citizens of the Town of Jamestown R.I. Local 69 is the union that represents the Jamestown Public Works Department. We were disappointed on hearing the news of the proposed Taylor Point highway barn site. We respect the opinions of our elected officials. They have a difficult job.

Good reasons to vote to approve
After twenty years of deliberation, the Town of Jamestown has crafted a brilliant solution for the town's pressing needs to store and maintain its trucks and heavy equipment.

Reject Taylor Point barn site
I am urging fellow Jamestown voters to reject the Special Referendum on the highway barn on Aug. 28. I believe this for several reasons: 1) The Jamestown Public Works Union opposes the Taylor Point site strongly enough to pay for an ad against it.

Taylor Point is a wise choice for all
I hope the voters are not tricked into believing that the highway barn should not be built at Taylor Point for reasons of "aesthetics" as claimed by a number of writers to the Jamestown Press. This assertion was clearly put to rest by the article in last week's paper by Town Administrator Bruce Keiser, along with Bill Burgin's renderings.

Taylor Point a better choice
I would like to share my reasons for Jamestown to support the Town Council vote locating the highway facility at the upper Taylor Point location. As stated the night the council voted, I believe both Lot 47 and Taylor Point are suitable, justifiable locations. Both have equalizing advantages and disadvantages. Both are relatively the same cost. Both would get the job done.
