Picked up on bench warrant
David Swain, 51, of 79 North Main Rd., was picked up on a bench warrant on Aug. 11 from Newport District Court and charged for failing to make a court appearance to pay fines for unlawfully transporting raccoons, a protected species, police said.
Swain appeared before the Justice of the Peace and was released on bail of $228.50. The original charge was for trapping raccoons on his property and transporting them to the north end of Conanicus Island where he released them, police said.
Driving a stolen vehicle
Erin Beckwith, 25, of 130 America Way, was charged Aug. 12 with driving a stolen vehicle and with violating a home confinement. The victim reported the vehicle stolen to the Jamestown police and Beckwith was arrested by the Cranston police department.
Beckwith was held at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston for arraignment. A court date was scheduled for Aug. 14 at Newport District Court, police said.
Marie Benoit, 51, of Gloucester was charged Aug. 8 with making harassing phone calls to a family member, police said.
The Jamestown police obtained an arrest warrant for Benoit and the Smithfield Police Department assisted in the arrest. Benoit was arraigned at Newport District Court and a pre-trial date was scheduled for Aug. 17 at Newport District Court, police said.
Charged in break-in
Jerome McDevitt, 20, of Portsmouth was charged Aug. 8 with domestic breaking and entering of a High Street dwelling.
A neighbor reported a suspicious subject in an adjacent back yard. The police were called and officers saw a broken window at the residence. McDevitt was found hiding inside.
McDevitt was held at the police department where a scheduled court date is yet to be determined, police said.
