School starts next week
      The first day of school for students attending North Kingstown High School is Wednesday, Aug. 29, with the opening bell scheduled to ring at 7:25 a.m. In Jamestown, classes for students in grades 1 to 8 will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 8:10 a.m. Students in kindergarten and pre-K will have an orientation on Sept. 5 and will begin classes the following day, Sept. 6.

Orientation day for new families
      The Jamestown schools will hold an Orientation Day for new families on Wednesday, Aug. 29. For families new to the schools, meet at the Melrose Avenue Multipurpose Room at 4 p.m. All incoming kindergarten families should meet in the Melrose Avenue Multi-purpose Room at 5 p.m. and all incoming pre-school families will meet in the Melrose Avenue music room at 6 p.m.

Film premier at library tonight
      Independent filmmaker Jay Craven will be at the Jamestown library tonight, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. to introduce his film, "Disappearances," in its Rhode Island premiere. Based on the award-winning novel by Howard Frank Mosher, the film is a spellbinding tale of high-stakes whiskey smuggling, a family's mysterious past, and a young boy's rite of passage.
