View the fireworks, hear the music

Naval Station Newport will present the "Salute to Summer," concert and fireworks extravaganza on Dewey Field, featuring the Navy Band Northeast and opening act Soul Power, beginning at 5 p.m., Friday, Aug. 31.

Soul Power will get the music started with their 11-piece band, featuring vocalist David Cherry, performing the hits of James Brown, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Sly and the Family Stone to name a few. At approximately 7:30 p.m., the Navy Band Northeast Concert Band will take the stage to perform patriotic marches, light concert pieces, as well as swing and classic rock and roll. The program will include a salute to veterans of all services.

The evening will culminate with a spectacular fireworks display beginning just after dark, at approximately 9:15 p.m.

The concert is free and the public is invited as guests of the commanding officer. Concert audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Due to increased security measures, no coolers, backpacks, glass bottles, or pets will be allowed on the naval complex.

The general public should enter Naval Station Newport through Gate One, the main entrance near the Officers' Club, beginning at 4 p.m.

Music, concession sales, and games for kids at Dewey Field will begin at 5 p.m. The Naval War College Museum will remain open with extended hours that evening in support of the event. The concert rain date is Saturday, Sept. 1. The concert and fireworks are sponsored by Newport Life Magazine, United Rentals, Dunkin Donuts, Budweiser, Home Depot, Phillips Foods and USAA.
