Help the band play & write a check!

The Jamestown Community Band is holding a fund-raising drive to raise money for items that keep the music coming at many town events throughout the year.

Bob Saunders, president of the band, said they need to purchase sheet music, new uniform shirts and they often buy instruments for members who may not be able to afford them. He said the band owns most of the drums and "heavy equipment" they use.

They also provide an annual scholarship to a graduating high school student that has been a member of the band, Saunders said.

Currently the band has about 30 members, Saunders said, but he would be happy to see an increase. "The ideal number would be about 40," Saunders said.

Needed are people who play trumpet, "That's high on the list," Saunders said, adding they also could use some more saxophones, clarinets and "a trombone or two."

There was a convenient donation envelope in last week's edition of the Press, but in case it was missed, checks can be mailed to the Jamestown Community Band, in care of Jeff Hunter, treasurer, 198 East Shore Rd., Jamestown, RI 02835.
