Friendly Visitors need some help
Child & Family Services has many volunteer opportunities for people who would like to lend a hand to someone who could use some extra support. Call the volunteer office at 848-4210 for more information.
The Friendly Visitor program matches volunteers with the homebound elderly. Currently there are two elders waiting. Volunteers might chat, read, or take their elder for a ride. However, the most important consideration is to be a good listener. Hours are flexible. A one-year commitment is preferred.
There is also an opportunity for a man and woman who relate well to children. The agency has an eleven-year-old boy and girl who could benefit from a mentor. The boy likes all sports and age typical activities. The girl likes arts and crafts and all kinds of music. They both live in Newport. This would be a year commitment and could be arranged to accommodate the volunteer's schedule. Background screening is required.
The Agency's Youth Opportunity Center would like a volunteer to design and lead an etiquette class for teens who are preparing to enter the job market. They need direction developing basic manners which will help them when making job contacts and participating in interviews. This could probably be done in two sessions around 3 p.m. weekdays at the Florence Gray Center in Newport Heights.
