      John C. Chase of Jamestown has been named a 2008 commended student by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Chase is a senior at North Kingstown High School.

Book group reads 'Thirteenth Tale'
      The Afternoon Book Discussion at the Jamestown library continues on Tuesday, Oct. 9, with the book "The Thirteenth Tale: A Novel" by Diane Setterfield. The Tuesday book discussion, meets the second Tuesday of each month. The group is open to the public and has discussed a variety of fiction and non-fiction titles. Consider dropping in for a discussion.

Create fun Halloween crafts
      On Thursday, Oct. 11, from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m., the Jamestown Philomenian Library will hold a craft workshop for children ages 6 and up, along with their grownups. Participants will create fun Halloween decorations to take home. The group will use scissors, glue, paper, fabric, ribbon, and found materials to make many one-of-a kind objects.

Have your pet blessed Sunday
      The annual Blessing of the Animals will take place at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 11:30 a.m. Pets and their owners will congregate under the beech tree on the lawn of the church for a very brief service followed by the individual blessing of each pet by Fr. Kevin Lloyd.

Knights pasta dinner Saturday
      The St. Mark Church Knights of Columbus will be holding their Fall Primo Pasta Dinner on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. The menu for the evening will be pasta, meatballs, sausage and peppers, salad, Italian bread and butter, coffee and dessert. All are guaranteed to be the best this side of Federal Hill. Ticket prices are $8 for adults, children 10 and under, $5.

      The Friends of the Jamestown Library present "Amazon Adventure" with Chris Powell on Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. as part of the Friend's series on travel. Join Chris Powell for an exciting trip on the motor yacht Tucano into the heart of Amazonas. From the capitol city, Manaus, travel more than two hundred miles up the Rio Negro into the Rio Branco.
