Consider sponsoring a NAPS student this year

The Naval Academy Preparatory School at Naval Station Newport seeks volunteers to sponsor midshipman and Cadet Candidates for the 2007-2008 academic year.

The NAPS Midshipman and Cadet Candidate Sponsor Program provides students with the opportunity to formulate relationships with the civilian and military members of the surrounding community and for the sponsors to provide a home away from home while acting as a mentor and role model for future midshipmen and cadets.

Host families offer students respite from the rigors of their military and academic responsibilities and an opportunity to relax in an informal, hospitable environment. Sponsors provide transportation, extend invitations to community and/or family activities or functions, or open their homes to students for a home-cooked meal, a place to study, or just for watching television. Additionally, there are holiday periods such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break when some students will be unable to make it home. For some of the students, it is their first experience being away from home.

Typical liberty periods are Fridays, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to midnight; and Sundays, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Sponsors should live within 25 miles of NAPS and have a positive outlook on the military. Military sponsors should hold the rank of E-7 and above.
