Norman E. Lawrence Sr., 78, of Beacon Avenue, passed away Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007
He was the beloved husband of the late Lucille K. (Avery) Lawrence for 60 years.
Born in West Warwick, he was a son of the late Walter and Minnie (Rogers) Lawrence.
Mr. Lawrence served in the US Navy for 23 years before retiring. He later worked for the carpenters union local 1293.
He was an active member and served as deacon for many years at the Central Baptist Church. He was an active force in the creation of an office site named the Lawrence Building for the American Baptist Churches of RI at Camp Canonicus in Exeter. He assisted in the reconstruction of a church in Mississippi after hurricane Katrina. Mr. Lawrence loved sharing his experiences in the Navy and the various projects he worked on.
He leaves six children, Norman E. Lawrence, Jr. in Pennsylvania, George S. Lawrence of Washington, William A. Lawrence of New Bedford, Mass., Timothy S. Lawrence of Providence, Patricia S. Nascimento of Coventry and Janice C. Ryng-Dutton of Jamestown; three brothers, Francis Lawrence of Virginia, Everett Lawrence of Mississippi, and Walter Lawrence of Cranston; a sister, Nancy Briggs of Scituate; eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held yesterday in the RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007 at 1 p.m. at the Central Baptist Church, 99 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Camp Canonicus, PO Box 330, Exeter, RI 02822 will be appreciated.
