Town committees need volunteer members
One (1) vacancy exists on the Beavertail State Park Advisory Committee for a three-year term appointment. This Committee is charged with overseeing the use and operation of the park. Meetings are conducted semiannually.
Two (2) vacancies exist on the Jamestown Conservation Commission. The purpose of this committee is to promote and develop the natural resources, protect the watershed resources, and preserve natural esthetic areas within municipalities. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. The appointment is for a three-year term.
One (1) vacancy exists on the Jamestown Fire Department Compensation Committee, for a citizen at-large. In accordance with Section 4 of an ordinance providing tax relief for the members of the Jamestown Volunteers Fire Department, it shall be the duty of the committee to make annual recommendations to the Tax Assessor regarding the eligibility for an exemption for each member. The committee shall promulgate rules and regulations for the maintenance and safekeeping of such attendance records as are reasonably calculated to provide suitable evidence of eligibility under the program. This appointment is for a three-year term appointment.
Two (2) vacancies exist on the Jamestown Harbor Management Commission, each for a three-year term. A member of the Riparian Property Residents (Harbor Waters) and a Non-Boating Resident are needed. Anyone with an interest in harbor management can apply, but the Town Council will give preference to these particular representatives. The Harbor Commission is the local advisory and regulatory body authorized by the Town Council to manage the coastal waters and harbor areas of the town through the implementation of the Comprehensive Harbor Management Plan and subsequent ordinances. The Harbor Commission enforces the provisions and ordinances of the Harbor Management Plan as well as adopts additional policies, rules, and regulations for the implementation of the Harbor Management Plan and such ordinances, subject to the approval of the Town Council and the RI Coastal Resource Management Council.
One (1) vacancy exists on the Jamestown Housing Authority for a five-year term appointment. Meetings are conducted at the Pemberton Apartments located at 45 Pemberton Ave. on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Responsibilities include but are not limited to, investigations into the living, dwelling and housing conditions and into the means and methods of improving such conditions.
Three (3) vacancies exist on the Jamestown Planning Commission, each for a four-year term appointment. Meetings are conducted twice a month on the first and third Wednesday of the month, with members receiving a small stipend at the end of the year. The Commission is governed by both State and Local laws. Responsibilities include consideration of growth development, preservation and land use in the Town of Jamestown along with updating the Comprehensive Community Plan, Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision Regulations.
Three (3) vacancies exist on the Jamestown Zoning Board of Review. They are for alternate members, with one-year appointments. These alternate members shall sit and may actively participate in hearings and shall vote if a member of the Board is unable to serve. Meetings are conducted once a month.
Two (2) vacancies exist on the Library Board of Trustees, for three-year term appointments. Trustees act as legal guardians and custodians of the Jamestown Philomenian Library. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month.
One (1) vacancy exists on the Tree Preservation & Protection Committee for a three-year term appointment. The Tree Committee meets monthly to promote conservation, planting, health and growth of public trees on the island.
One (1) vacancy exists for a voting member from Jamestown on the Quonset Development Corporation Board of Directors. This state-level board member will be responsible for the development and management of the industrial park at Quonset Point for a threeyear term appointment. Applicants will be representing Jamestown's interest in the development at Quonset Point and should have some experience in commercial/ industrial development. Meetings are held at the Quonset EDC Office located at 30 Enterprise Dr. in North Kingstown, monthly on Monday's at 5 p.m.
One (1) vacancy exists within the Water Resource Protection Committee. This committee is charged with the acquisition of open space land or the development rights that protects or preserves the water resources of the Town of Jamestown for a threeyear term appointment.
Any resident who is a qualified elector in the Town of Jamestown and is interested in serving on any of the committees, should contact the Town Clerk by submitting a letter of interest and background. Applications can be found on the Internet at www.jamestownri.net or at the Jamestown Library, 26 North Main Rd., and Town Clerk's Office located at 93 Narragansett Ave. Persons who have submitted letters in the past are encouraged to do so again.
