A retrospective of the Village Christmas Tree
     This year the Jamestown Village Christmas tree was donated by Ed and Claire Furtado in memory of Frankie Furtado. The Norway Spruce tree was planted on April 18, 1974, the second birthday of Laura Furtado Caster. Laura is pictured, above, with the tree on the day of its planting 23 years ago.

Rembrandt topic of artist lunch
      The artist Rembrandt and "The Dutch Explosion" will be the topic of "Lunch with the Artist" on Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 12 p.m., at the Newport Art Museum. The informal noontime discussion will be facilitated by Richard Tyre and is free for museum members, with a $3 charge for nonmembers.

Chorus caroling set for Dec. 17
      The Jamestown Community Chorus invites Jamestowners of all ages to join them for caroling around the island on Monday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m. Carolers will meet outside the Central Baptist Church, 99 Narragansett Ave., and proceed along an itinerary, which is now being developed by director B.J. Whitehouse.

Teen center is ready for a sneak peek
      Just inside the recreation center entrance, hammers and radio tunes come from a room off to the right. Since the community theatre drew its curtain, volunteers at the teen center have been busier than elves in the rush to renovate a space by Christmas, a place for island teens to gather. Frostbiters start sixth season
      The frostbiters greeted and helped each other unload their Shellback dinghies from trucks and cars and launch them at the Conanicut Marina for the opening day of their sixth season of racing. Bill and May Munger provided for the use of the floats for the frostbiting winter sailing season.

Football ends season on winning note
      The North Kingstown High School football team capped their season with a win over South Kingstown on Thanksgiving Day at the University of Rhode Island. Islander John Perrotti finished his high school career with a solid performance and was named defensive MVP of the game. He scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with a minute left to play to win the game.

Snowboarders get early snow
      The snow arrived a little early for island snowboarders Ben Schmidt and Nate Pease, who headed up to Ski Market Underground in Warwick earlier this month for the Pickle Jam Rail Jam. The snow didn't actually fall from the sky, but was brought in from local ice rinks as ice shavings and was packed around a metal rail in the parking lot of the snowboard shop.

      The Conservation Commission's Conanicut Island Trail Guide, more than a year in the making, is finally on sales racks about town, in time to be ballyhooed as valued-packed $1 (nontaxed) holiday gifts for Hanukkah, Christmas or Kwanzaa.

Holiday plant sale fund raiser
      Some 1,500 poinsettia plants, many of them unusual varieties, will be sold Saturday, Dec. 1 by URI Master Gardeners as part of an annual fund-raising and research event.

Holiday centerpiece workshop offered
      The Friends of the Jamestown Library will present a Boxwood Tree Workshop at the library on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 8, from 1 to 3 p.m. Hosted by Donna De- Mello from Clark Farms this is a "make it and take it" workshop with participants creating a large centerpiece-type decoration. All materials will be provided.

Recreation class relocation
      The Jamestown Recreation Department has announced that effective Dec. 1, all recreation dance and exercise classes presently being held at the Well Spring building will now be held at the Jamestown Country Club, 245 Conanicus Ave.

Helping those in need
     McQuade's Market Manager Maurice Browning, left, Jamestown Rotary Club president-elect David Reardon, center, and John Williamson, Rotary Club past-president and McQuade's clerk, gather to put together this year's Thanksgiving baskets for those in need. The Jamestown Rotary Club Thanksgiving Basket program was started by Joe Porter and has been a yearly event since 1979, with over 600 baskets handed out. The baskets included a 10 to 12 pound turkey and everything needed for a full Thanksgiving dinner.

Final tests for electrolysis damage show no problems
      Studies at East Ferry marina proved no electrical currents in the water were strong enough to cause the damage done to the new harbormaster's boat, Police Chief Thomas Tighe reported at the Nov. 21 Harbor Commission meeting. The findings will be sent to the manufacturer with a request for repairs.

Conservation Commission wants role in drafting any new building codes
      Conservation Commissioners who have been monitoring the town's talks about form-based zoning are not satisfied yet with data they have seen on the use of environmental principles in guiding future town development. This was the consensus they expressed at their Nov.
