Downing named editor at the Press

Adrienne Downing has been appointed editor of the Jamestown Press. She succeeds Donna Drago, who has retired.

Originally from Maryland, Downing has lived in seven different states and one foreign country as a military wife.

Downing started her career as a freelance writer covering Major League Baseball for several magazine and newspaper publications, but she has always had a penchant for community news.

She was previously a sports reporter and editor for the Desert News Group in Southern California and was the sports writer and editor for the Press before assuming her current position.

Downing is an active member of the North Kingstown High School and Jamestown parentteacher groups and is a board member of the NKHS Booster Club. She is an avid sports fan, cook and skier.

Her husband, Lance, is a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and is stationed with the Officer Training Command in Newport. They have three children: Caitlin, a sophomore at North Kingstown High School, Connor, a seventh grader at Lawn Avenue School, and Ryan, a second grader at Melrose Avenue School.

Drago served as editor of the Jamestown Press for nearly two years and was previously a reporter for the Press for nine years. She is planning to write a column for the Press starting in 2008. She said her retirement plans include travel, gardening and serving the community.
