Holiday plant sale fund raiser
Some 1,500 poinsettia plants, many of them unusual varieties, will be sold Saturday, Dec. 1 by URI Master Gardeners as part of an annual fund-raising and research event.
Since late July, 50 Master Gardener volunteers have been tending the plants daily, following a strict procedure of watering, fertilizing and pinching that results in converting the poinsettias, which arrive as three-inch-high "plugs," into fullblown holiday decorations.
The plant sale will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Master Gardener greenhouses located at East Farm, off Route 108.
East Farm is located on Route 108, 1 mile south of the main traffic light in Kingston. Parking is free but is remote from the site of the sale. Good walking shoes are recommended and people who plan to make multiple purchases are advised to bring a small wagon or other conveyance to transport their plants to the parking area.
The sale will be held regardless of the weather. All proceeds are used for public education and outreach activities conducted under the URI Master Gardener Program.
