Jean Douglas, 95

Jean Moment Douglas, 95, passed away on November 18, 2007 in Newtown, Pa.

Jean was born on Jan. 9, 1912 in Newark, N. J. Her family moved to Plainfield, N.J. where her father, the Reverend John James Moment, served many years as minister of the Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church.

Jean was married on May 6, 1938 to Walter S. Douglas, also of Plainfield, N.J. Walter Douglas served as the senior partner of the consulting engineering firm of Parsons, Brinckerhoff, Quade and Douglas in New York City.

In life, Jean was a "pistol." She was fiercely independent, funny and courageous. She loved life, people, dancing, music, reading, current events and thoroughly enjoyed both entertaining and being entertaining. She was artistic and an avid gardener who was happiest outdoors admiring the flora and fauna. She loved to travel and was always planning her next adventure.

She believed strongly in volunteer work for her community. In Plainfield, she volunteered for her church, Muhlenberg Hospital, the local garden club, and was an active member of the Junior League.

Both she and her husband shared a love of the water in general and of sailing in particular. As a young girl, Jean spent summers at her family's camp on a lake in Maine. Her husband, as a boy, spent summers on the ocean in New Jersey. After her husband's retirement, they relocated to Jamestown, R.I. where they enjoyed being part of a beautiful New England sailing community. There they were members of the Conanicut Yacht Club, where Walter served on the Board of Trustees and, in 1979, acted as treasurer. They kept their boat there for years and made many dear friends. Jean found ample outlets for her many interests and continued her volunteer work. She volunteered for the local chapter of the garden club, Meals on Wheels and enjoyed a particularly fulfilling experience at the Wickford Elementary School. Always up for a new adventure, in her 80's she worked with children, helping them learn to use the computer.

She is preceded in death by her adoring husband, "Douger" and her beloved son, David Spalding Douglas. She is survived by her two daughters, Joanne Douglas Olsson of Fort Collins, Colo., and Nancy Douglas Engblom of Yardley, Pa., and her four grandchildren, Andrew Brian Engblom of Arlington, Va., Lisa Allison Engblom of Redondo Beach, Calif., Justin Douglas Olsson of Washington, D.C. and Schuyler Moment Olsson, currently abroad.

A memorial service will be held at 11a.m. on Jan. 5, 2008 at the Central Baptist Church, 99 Narragansett Ave., in Jamestown.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the David Spalding Douglas Fund in care of the Rhode Island Foundation, One Union Square Station, Providence, R.I. 02903.
