DUI arrest

Jacob M. Bruns, 26, of Coventry was charged March 5 with driving under the influence, police said.

At about 3 a.m., a police cruiser stopped behind Bruns' car at the corner of Narragansett and Conanicus Ave. and waited for him to leave the intersection. When he didn't drive away, the police honked their horn. When Bruns still didn't drive off, they flashed their lights and again got no response. Finally police shined a flashlight in the car and found Bruns asleep behind the wheel with his foot on the brake and the engine running, police said.

A pre-trial hearing was set for March 16 at Newport District Court.

Warrant arrest

Matthew A. Medeiros, 21, of North Kingstown was picked up for a bench warrant March 5 at the Bay Voyage Hotel where he works, police said.

Police were investigating an unrelated matter at the Bay Voyage when they saw Medeiros on the premises. The warrant was issued from Newport Second District Court for failure to appear for sentencing, according to police.

Car break-ins continue

Car break-ins at the south end of the downtown area continue, police said. They encourage all island residents to lock their cars and report anyone acting suspiciously. So far, only unlocked vehicles have been vandalized.
