Alexander P. Bates, Jr., 89

Alexander P. Bates, Jr., 89, of Beach Avenue, died Friday, March 2, 2007 at home. He was the husband of the late Louise W. (Welch) Bates. He was a Marine Engineer and a Naval Architect for over 40 years, retiring in 1985.

Born in West Greenwich, the son of the late Alexander P. Bates, Sr., and Emily M. (Bucklin) Bates, Bates was a graduate of M.I.T. Class of 1938, a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, The Audubon Society, and The Nature Conservancy. He was a communicant of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and was a member of the church choir. He volunteered in the parish thrift shop.

He is survived by two children, Susan B. Rasmussen and her husband Charles L. of Cranston and Geoffrey J. Bates and his wife Marcia A. of Derry, NH. He was the grandfather of two and greatgrandfather of three.

A Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated Saturday, March 10, 2007 at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Jamestown, to which relatives and friends are invited. Burial will be private. Calling hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 87 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown, RI, 02835 would be appreciated.
