Multiple charges filed

Mariah L. Burns, 29, of 136 Sloop St., was charged with driving with a suspended license, driving without consent of the owner, and vandalism while driving the allegedly stolen car, police said.

Police said Burns' father called them when she took his car. After she returned, the police were called again for a domestic dispute at which time Burns admitted being involved in an accident and running over a mailbox as well as hitting a tree and damaging other shrubs and property on America Way.

No court dates have been set because the case is still under investigation, police said.

Drunk driving charged

Mark H. Mercer, 31, of 132 Narragansett Ave. was stopped for swerving and driving well below the speed limit on Narragansett Avenue. He was charged with drunk driving and refusing to submit to a Breathalyzer test. A pre-trial court date is set for April 13 at Newport District Court, and a traffic court arraignment is scheduled for April 17, police said.

Two juveniles were charged with vandalism for spray painting public property on Ft. Wetherill Road, according to police. They were identified by a witness who called the police. The youths were released to their parents and prosecution will not be pursued if they return and clean up the mess, police said.
