Filkins memorial event planned The Friends and family of James R. Filkins are gathering to honor his life and accomplishments on Sunday, June 24, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Lt. Col. John C. Rembijas Memorial Pavilion. This is an open invitation to Jim's many friends and admirers to gather in celebration of a life well spent. A short memorial service will begin promptly at 2 p.m. and will include the reading of a proclamation designating June 24 as James R. Filkins Day in Jamestown. Readings and testimonials by friends and family are encour- aged. The Jamestown Chorus will sing and bagpipe music, a favorite of Jim's, will be played during this part of the service. Throughout the afternoon, musicians will be playing lively Irish music. Jim's artwork and family pictures will be displayed. Friends are invited to bring a picnic lunch if they so desire, along with lawn chairs and blankets. The committee organizing the memorial celebration will be providing "fire and ice," gas grills for cooking food brought by the guests, as well as ice to keep cold those drinks planned brought by the guests. Guests are also asked to haul back out anything they bring in including used paper products and plastic cups. His family felt this was the best way to honor Jim who never much liked funerals and who had such enthusiasm for life, family, Irish music, choral music, art, unselfish service to the community, and finally, a good party. |
