Teen book group to meet The Middle School Book Group will meet Friday, July 13, to discuss "The Black Duck," by award-winning Rhode Island author, Janet Taylor Lisle. The Black Duck takes place in coastal Rhode Island during the Prohibition era. A Historical fiction book, it is also full of intrigue. Black Duck is one of the RI Teen Book Award nominees for 2008. James E. Garman, a local historian, author, and history teacher from Portsmouth, will be a special guest presenter to tell the book group how Prohibition affected Newport County and about specific events that happened during prohibition in the Newport County area. The book group will meet from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. Contra dance scheduled The Newport Community Contra dance will be held on Saturday, June 23, from 7 to 10:30 p.m. The dance is open to all ages, and no partner or experience is necessary. The dance will be at Fenner Hall, at 15 Fenner Ave. in Newport. Admission is $7, or $5 for seniors and youth 18 and under.
