Conanicut Island ART

The community center will be overflowing with hand-crafted items, including jewelry of all kinds, pottery, glassware, clay creations, useful and decorative sculpture, photography and paintings, embroidered textiles, knitted and crocheted goods, scarves, children's clothing, "Island Treasures," and much, much more on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. You are sure to find several treasures for yourself, and perhaps tuck away a few gifts for later. Some new exhibitors will be showing their work, including artisans from the island. And it's all good - entry is free, and your support of this event helps fund CIAA scholarships for next year. Stop by after the Fools' Rules Regatta or in between all of the other fun things happening that day. Handicap-accessible parking is available on the Union Street side of the building.

Art Show News

The Annual Art Exhibit was a great success, with several hundred people attending the opening and a steady stream of art enthusiasts visiting the community center each subsequent day.

The juror, Dr. Karl Emil Willers, also attended the opening night reception to present awards in person. He wanted to meet and talk with Jamestown artists, since he was genuinely interested in, and enthusiastic about, the work in the show. Dr. Willers awarded prizes to: Irene Stawicki, First Place, oil on paper, "I Nearly Saw the Dalai Lama in my Green Fairy Shoes;" Martha Milot, Second Place, acrylic, "Crabbing - Dumplings Dock;" Jeremy Swain, Third Place, sculpture, "Are You My Mother?" and, Honorable Mentions to Eleanor Gravdahl, oil, "Hanging Rock;" Karen Krider, gelatin silver print, "Third Beach Memories;" Kate Petrie, photograph, "Over Crow-ded;" Wilson Pollack, acrylic, "Dutch Harbor;" and, Joe Vecchione, etching, "Moment." The "People's Choice" award went to Pat Tuff for her photograph, "Summer Hangout."

More Member News

The Portsmouth Art Guild has a busy gallery, with several members who are also CIAA artists, including founding members Wendy Crooks and Carol Gates. Deborah Lichtenstein and Ernie Savastano were part of the Six Plein Aire Painters Show that ran through July. The next Portsmouth show, "Abstractions," runs through August. Hours are Thursday through Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m. Look for CIAA members in that show, too, as well as on accompanying wall spaces.

Barbara Marom-Pollack recently had a quilt on exhibit at the South County Museum.

Jeanne Bunkley's visually striking and historically fascinating show will be at the library through October. Even if you missed the lovely opening of the CIAA's new exhibition space, courtesy of the library and Judy Bell, please don't miss seeing the show.

Membership

CIAA membership is open to any full- or part-time Jamestown resident, artists and non-artists alike. The cost of an individual membership is a whopping $15. Contact Priscilla Foley at 423-2776 for more information. The CIAA is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation.
