Voters approve highway barn

Jamestowners on Tuesday approved the construction of a new highway garage at Taylor Point by a vote 934 to 753.

The question on the ballot in the special election read: "Shall an act, passed at the 2007 session of the General Assembly, entitled 'An act authorizing the Town of Jamestown to finance the construction of a highway garage at a site to be acquired from the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority and adjacent town land, and to issue not more than $1,500,000 bonds and notes therefore be approved?"

The referendum passed with 55.36 percent voting to approve and 44.64 percent voting to reject.

Election officials said 1,687 of the 4,479 registered voters in Jamestown participated in Tuesday's special election for a 37.66 percent turnout.

For complete details on the election and reaction to the vote, see the Thursday, Aug. 30, issue of the Jamestown Press.
