It's all about NIMBY
I try to find a little humor about the highway barn controversy that appears in the "Letters" section of the Press, but I rarely do. What I did find in the past two issues of the Press, is that no matter how hard the pro and con writers try to convince readers to support one location or the other...

A simple choice
It seems like such a simple choice: Taylor Point- possibly spoil the view. Lot 47- possibly contaminate the water. C'mon Jamestowners- in the late 1800s contamination of the water was responsible for totally impacting the future development of Jamestown.

A neighbor's opinion
Having been in close proximity to the town highway barn for the last twenty five years, I'd like to set a few things straight. They are: 1.

Why I have changed my mind
For many years, I supported locating a highway barn up at the north end. To transform something problematic, the dump, into something useful, a highway barn, seemed like a great idea to me. But this past year, I have changed my mind. Mixing the two issues of highway barn and dump closure, by locat...

Of course hindsite is 20/20
The Town of Jamestown, 350 years old this year, will continue to exist long after we who live here now have gone. We should therefore try to avoid doing things on purpose that make us look silly.

We support Taylor Point
My wife and I support the proposed location of the Department of Public Works highway barn at Taylor Point. We believe it is important to have public works facilities centrally located, and we believe this location does not pose a potential threat to the island's water supply.

Other items you should consider
On Tuesday night I attended the Town Council meeting and listened carefully to the town manager's hour long presentation. In addition, he was kind enough to meet me at the proposed site to answer additional questions and do a walk through of the plans for the highway barn.

Lot 47 makes a lot more sense
The "not in my backyard" contingent is certainly in full force, and like most of us I suspect, I am appalled at the ceaseless politics involved in the highway barn location issue. Full disclosure: It would be somewhat in my backyard if built at Taylor Point, but I think it would be a shame for all...

Don't spoil scenic vista at Point
For over twenty-five years I have been involved in the preservation of our island's open spaces and natural beauty. Our farmlands, salt marshes, woodlands and beautiful coast make Conanicut Island a unique place to live.

Commissioner clears his name
Sam Bari's account of the recent Harbor Management Commission meeting in the Aug. 16 issue of the Jamestown Press presents a false impression of my involvement in the controversy that has developed over Head's Beach that must be corrected.

Not allowed to speak her mind
On Aug. 8, for the very first time, I chose to attend a Harbor Commission meeting. I was more than disappointed with the way in which the meeting was conducted by Chairman Michael de Angeli.

Head's beach deed should rule
At the July 11 meeting of the Harbor Commission, I expressed the concerns of the Jamestown Shores Association regarding the proposed mooring site at Head's Beach (Jamestown Press, June 21, 2007).

A loss for schools
After one year of service at the Jamestown schools, we not only lose a great educator but a great person as well. I am saddened by the departure of Mr. Mike Franco. He was a great administrator/ teacher and role model for our students. His contributions, in just one short year, went far beyond wh...

Why, no microphone?
What a shame someone did not have the foresight to obtain a microphone and a podium to project the voices of those who spoke at the town hall dedication. We did read a few words, spoken by David Long, in the Newport Daily News the following day.

Thanks to caring school staff
I want to thank Wendy Williams, Miss Jenny and Mrs. Caswell on behalf of my daughter for the wonderful summer Peer Model Program provided at the school this year. I want to thank the special education staff for supporting this endeavor. Caroline came home from her first day saying, "That's the bes...

Too many deer
"Home, home on the range where the deer etc., etc." For several summers, after a considerable expenditure of time, energy and money, my son Bruce's vegetable garden has been decimated before harvest by deer! Now I have come down with Lyme disease caused by a deer tick bite! Down with deer!
