Ruth Van Slyck, 77
Ruth "Mali" Van Slyck, 77, of Middletown, died peacefully at home on Aug. 28, 2007, after a long illness, which

she fought courageously

every step of the way.

Born on October 27, 1929, in Plymouth, Mass., she developed a wildly creative imagination and dreamed of world travel. She spent years living in Asia studying their traditions and embracing Buddhism, but ultimately she was happiest in Newport and considered it home.

She is survived by five children, Toby White, Alex White, Kate Van Slyck, Ashley Schofield and Nick Van Slyck, as well as 10 grandchildren, all of whom will miss her. She also leaves behind her close friend and companion, Connie Heird.

Because of Ruth's interest in international issues and her compassion for those in need, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to Doctors Without Borders (www.doctorswithoutborders. org).

A memorial service will follow at a later date.

Arrangements were by Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.
