Keep an eye out for darting deer As the weather turns cooler on our beautiful island, we would like to remind our fellow Jamestowners that this is also the season that wildlife may become more unpredictable in their behavior. November is the start of the "rutting" season, when deer become much more active and the danger of deer strikes dramatically increases. The usually shy deer are now much more active and may dart quickly across our roads. This is also the start of hunting season and the deer are naturally moving quickly to safer areas. We are asking our fellow Jamestowners to be especially watchful during the next month, in order to avoid a collision with a deer. The most effective measure that a driver can take is to simply slow down. Scan the roadsides for these animals and if you see one run across a road, chances are another will follow. The greatest population of deer on our island is in the North End, so if you are traveling in this area please reduce your speed and stay alert. Deer are naturally most active at dusk and dawn, but at this time of year it can be any time of the day. So, please slow down and be watchful for the wildlife that shares our rural island.
