Chamber Chatter

By Vicki de Angeli

The Chamber is very excited about the upcoming Breakfast Series that will begin on Jan. 17.

In the last few years, these have been very popular events with each breakfast focusing on one aspect of running a business. The first topic, "Tax Issues for Small Businesses," will feature Rebecca Eunis of Eunis & Associates, CPA, Inc., as the speaker. The breakfast will be held at the Bay Voyage and will feature a full hot breakfast, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The cost for Chamber members is $15, and $20 for non-members. Please plan on bringing your questions, and hopefully you'll come away with a few good ideas that will help your bottom line. Future Breakfast Series dates are Feb. 28 and April 3. This year's Breakfast Series is being underwritten by William Lawrence of Cityscopes, Inc., a real estate advisory and brokerage services company, and Peter Brockmann of Brockmann Law Associates.

Applications are now being accepted from local organizations to become the recipients of the proceeds from this year's "Night At…" event. Each August the Chamber pairs up with a local organization and together we put on a fabulous night of dining and dancing under the stars, with silent and live auctions as the main fundraisers. Last year the Chamber was able to donate $4,500 to the Dutch Island Lighthouse Society, and was happy to become part of the effort to restore the beacon to its former beauty. If your organization is interested, please submit a short letter setting forth what you do, why you think you should be the recipients, and what goals this donation will help you reach. The group must be willing to work with the Chamber's "Night At" committee in making the evening a reality, from setting up and cleaning up the event, to getting donations for auction items. Everyone has a great time, and we look forward to another successful event this year. Please submit your letters to the Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 35, Jamestown, RI 02835.

The Chamber of Commerce is looking for applicants to fill a couple of Board vacancies, beginning this spring. If you are a Chamber member who would like to become more active in the business community, and would like to serve on the Board of Directors, we welcome your interest. Please contact our executive director, Donna Olney Kohler, at 423-3650.

The Jamestown Chamber of Commerce was very pleased to once again be part of the Christmas festivities here in Jamestown. The Polar Express Trolley, the visit to Santa's House, the Teddy Bear Tea, and the Dog Parade were well attended and everyone had a wonderful time. We would especially like to thank Barbara Szepatowski and her helpers at the Teen Center for taking on the task of directing the Christmas Committee, and seeing that all these great events came off without a hitch. Additionally, we would like to thank Peter Brockmann of Brockmann Law Associates and his wife, Michaela, Joan Goldstein, Jack and Mary Brittain of Jack's Electric, Phyllis Bedard of Trattoria Simpatico, Charlie Petit, the Secret Garden, Jane Lee of Jane Lee Designs, Tim Baker of Baker's Pharmacy, Barbara Lundy of Jamestown Fitness, and of course the Jamestown Fire and Police Departments. Thank you for donating the time and money necessary to make it all happen.

The Chamber receives many inquiries throughout the year for recommendations and referrals and if you have not already done so, this is the time to renew your membership, or apply as a new member. As part of your membership you will be listed on the Chamber's website. If you would like more information, or need an application form, please go to the Chamber website, www.jamestownRIchamber. com. A note to all the painters on the island: The Chamber does not have a single painting business as a member, so when people inquire we have no names to give them. Please join the Chamber and get your business listed.
