Go 'behind the curtain' with the community theatre

The Jamestown Community Theatre will offer a series of acting programs for children and adults this winter at the Jamestown country club building.

Classes will be led by Mary Schachtel Wright, JCT artistic director, by Rebecca Brazil, JCT veteran and music director, and by Iris Bohensky, also a veteran of JCT as an actress, stage manager, and on the production staff. Behind the Curtain is open to all Jamestown residents.

Lullaby League will be for children ages 5 to 7 years and will run on Sundays from Feb. 3 to March 16 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

According to instructors: "Over the years, we've seen five and six year olds counting the days until they'll turn seven years old and are able to be in the cast of a JCT play. In respect for them, we've created an earlier introduction to the world of JCT. This seven-week class invites young children to enter a comfortable, constructive, and creative environment, as they establish familiarity with the theatre. With imagination, children will play theatre games, create stories, and ride on "magic carpets," while they learn some basic elements of acting such as voice projection, diction, expression, and recitation. The culminating class will be an open house for parents, relatives, and friends to have a peek at what students have learned."

The Yellow Brick Road is for children from 8 to 12 years old and will run on Sundays from Feb. 3 to March 16 from 2 to 3:30 pm.

Instructors say: "This sevenweek class will cover fundamentals of acting and develop skills needed to perform dramatic and comedic texts. Students will learn how to use their voice, body, and imagination to use a variety of techniques to reach objectives while having fun. The culminating class will be an open house for parents, relatives, and friends to watch our young JCT actors at work!"

The Flying Monkeys is offered for those ages 12 through adult on Sundays from Feb. 3 to March 16 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Students will learn where to find monologues and scenes to be used in auditions, how to cut them, and how to rehearse and perform them.

The cost of each seven-week session is $35 including materials. Additional family members are $15 extra per person. Financial assistance is available by contacting Bill Piva at the Jamestown Recreation Department.

Register early as the classes may fill up quickly. Registration forms are available at The Jamestown Community Center and on their website at: http://www. jamestownri.net/rec/rec.html
