Support given to first responder screenings
      Deputy Minority Whip Bruce Long (R-Dist. 74 Jamestown, Middletown) and Senate Majority Leader Teresa Paiva-Weed (D-Dist. 13 Jamestown, Newport) have introduced legislation that will protect the health of firefighters in Rhode Island. These bills would establish a program to test all firefighters for bladder cancer.

Knights plan 'Two Saints' dinner
      The St. Mark Knights of Columbus Council #9197 will hold its annual "Two Saints" parish dinner on Saturday, March 15, at St. Mark Catholic Church on Narragansett Avenue. The dinner, held in the church hall, begins at 5 p.m. and honors the feast days of St. Patrick, on March 17, and St. Joseph, on March 19.

Clothing drive benefits women's shelters
      As part of her North Kingstown High School senior project, island resident Kyra Reppe will host a clothing drive on Thursday, March 20, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Jamestown Recreation Center. All proceeds will be donated to various women's shelters of Rhode Island. For more information, contact Reppe by e-mail at kyrareppe5@gmail.com.

Lighthouse group offers scholarships
      Applications for the 2008 Beavertail Lighthouse Museum Association Scholarship are available now in the Jamestown library. The scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors, from Jamestown, who have been accepted to a college or university.
