Summer athletic camps keep kids active
NKHS sports camps
North Kingstown High School has announced its summer sports camp schedule.
Soccer camp, for ages 6 to 14, will be held June 23 to 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The camp will offer individual instruction on fundamentals and individual and group instruction in all phases and positions. The cost is $120 and includes a camp T-shirt.
Volleyball camp will run in two sessions. The first session, from June 23 to 27, is for students entering grades 6 through 9 who have not played high school volleyball. The second, for players in grades 10 to 12 who have played at least one year of high school volleyball, will run from July 7 to 11. Each camp costs $160, run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and will include games, tournaments, contests and awards.
Beginner to intermediate boy's lacrosse camp will take place from July 7 to 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost is $120 and players with no lacrosse experience are welcome. A high school boys lacrosse shooters and stoppers camp will be held for four nights, from July 6 to 9, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. The camp will focus on shooting techniques and ball movement skills for attack/midfield players and all-around positioning and shot stopping for goalies.
Baseball camp will take place from July 14 to 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Area college coaches will serve as guest lecturers and there will be individual and team videotaping sessions. The cost is $100.
An all-day basketball camp for players ages 6 to 15 will run from July 21 to July 25, from 8:30 to 3 p.m. The camp will feature free throw, one-on-one, three-on-three and team championships. The cost is $160 per child.
A camp for serious basketball players, ages 11 to 18, will run from July 28 to Aug. 1. It will include individual instruction in passing, shooting, dribbling, agility training, rebounding and defense. Camp will start at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. The cost is $120.
A three-day football camp for players 10 to 18 years old will be held July 18 to 20. It will feature equal time for all players, contests and awards. The cost is $100.
A girl's lacrosse camp for beginner to intermediate skill levels, ages 8 to 14, will take place from July 14 to 18. The camp will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and include daily scrimmages for $120 per child.
New for 2008 is a street hockey camp from July 14 to 18. The camp will be held at McGinn Park and costs $120.
There will be two field hockey camp sessions from Aug. 11 to 15. The morning sessions, for players ages 9 to 14, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost for this camp is $120. The evening session is for players ages 12 to 17 and will include individual instruction on fundamentals. Camp will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. and is $100 per child.

British soccer camp
British Challenger will hold a soccer camp at the Lawn Avenue fields in Jamestown from Aug. 18 to 22.
The camp will run Monday through Friday and each child will be coached by a member of Challenger's British coaching staff, who are flown to the USA exclusively to work on these programs. This camp is just one of 1,500 that Challenger Sports are running throughout the US and Canada, for a record breaking 65,000 boys and girls of all ages.
Half-day camps for ages 4 to 14 are $120, and full day camps for 6 to 14 year olds are $170. Both sessions include a ball, T-shirt and parting gift. Morning sessions are 9 a.m. to noon, afternoon sessions are 1 to 4 p.m. and full-day sessions are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Those participants who register at least 45 days prior to camp will also receive an exclusive British soccer jersey. Proceeds from the camp will go to the Jamestown schools' athletic teams. Ocean State soccer camp
Ocean State Soccer in North Kingstown will hold its annual soccer camp from July 14 to 18. The camp is directed by Jamestown resident Kyle Froberg, who is the coach of the state champion NKHS boy's soccer team.
New this year is a full-day competitive training option for players 12 to 15 years old.
Camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with half-day options available. It takes place at the Ocean State soccer fields on Stony Lane in North Kingstown.
