Barton Hirst Lippincott, 82
Barton Hirst Lippincott, 82, a lifelong summer resident of Jamestown, died in Philadelphia on March 25, 2008.
Born in Jamestown in 1925, he was the son of Bertram and Elsie (Hirst) Lippincott. He graduated from William Penn Charter School, Yale University, and served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He was the former president and chairman of the J. B. Lippincott Publishing Company.
An avid sailor, he raced in several Bermuda races and in Narragansett Bay on Zeearend, Wild Swan and Marbella, and served as Commodore of the Conanicut Yacht Club. He is survived by his wife Carol Helms Lippincott, daughters Louise, Deborah, Frances and Elizabeth, as well as four step-children and 15 grandchildren and step-grandchildren. He was the brother of Bertram Lippincott, Jr. of Rosemont, Penn., Elsie Chadwick of Duxbury, Mass. and the late Joanna Sorlien.
The memorial service was held at the Greene Street Friends Meeting in Philadelphia on Saturday. Burial will be in Jamestown in the summer.
