      The Friends of the Jamestown Library will present an evening with filmmaker and island resident, Patti Cassidy who will show her film "Frozen Glory: the Secret Life of War Memorials," on Thursday, May 22, at 7 p.m. at the library.

Walk or bike to school tomorrow
      The Jamestown Schools have been celebrating Bike to School Week May 12 to 16, which will end tomorrow, Friday, May 16 with Zero Car Day. All students, parents, and staff are encouraged to bike, walk, or ride the bus to and from school. Consider carpooling, parking in a convenient location, and walking or biking to the schools.

Scholarship deadline now May 19
      The deadline for the Jamestown Women's Club scholarship has been extended to Monday, May 19. The women's club offers two annual scholarships of $1,000 each and applicants must be Jamestown residents and high school seniors who are planning to further their education.

Free compost bags now available
      With the help of two local businesses, Jamestown Hardware and the Secret Garden, the Jamestown Department of Public Works is kicking off its annual composting program with the free distribution of composting bags. These bags can be filled with yard waste and delivered by residents to the transfer station.

Church needs items for festival sale
      The annual June Festival at the Central Baptist Church will be Saturday, June 21, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Donations of items to sell will be accepted beginning this Saturday, May 17.

Volunteers needed for town boards
      Two vacancies exist on the Jamestown Affordable Housing Committee, which acts in an advisory capacity to the Town Council on issues relating to housing. Members sit as a review committee for proposed Housing Trust Fund Projects and conduct studies and analyses of the current housing conditions in Jamestown, to be used as part of the Comprehensive Plan.

Help count island birds this Sunday
      The 2008 Conanicut Island Spring Bird Count will be held on Sunday, May 18, from 6:30 a.m. to noon. Birding enthusiasts should meet at the Jamestown Town Hall, 93 Narragansett Ave. This is a change in location from previous bird counts.

Plant sale Saturday at East Ferry
      The Quononoquott Garden Club's annual spring plant sale is this Saturday, May 17, at East Ferry from 9 a.m. to noon. The rain date is Sunday, May 18. Healthy native plants, including unusual perennials, vibrant geraniums, specialty annuals and some hanging baskets as well as small trees and shrubs will be available.

Kettlebottom goes pheasant hunting
      This Saturday's program, on May 18, at noon on NESN, will feature John Longo on a pheasant hunt in Connecticut, during which his dog, Hatcher, gets quite a workout. Longo visits his friend, Vincent, to learn about beekeeping and to see how honey is produced.

NKHS Improv workshop tonight at Teen Center
      The North Kingstown High School Improv Troupe will host a night of improvisation tonight, May 15, at 6:30 p.m. at the Jamestown Teen Center. The event is open to the public and will help benefit students with autism. Students with autism and their families are encouraged to participate and enjoy a fun night of improvisational skits and acting.
