Farm needs volunteers for growing season
This Saturday the Jamestown Community Farm begins its eighth year of operations.
The farm, located on the corner of Eldred Avenue and East Shore Road, grows fresh vegetables for the people in the state who do not get enough to eat. In the seven growing seasons since its creation, the Community Farm has grown in excess of 85,000 pounds of fresh vegetables and has delivered this produce to food kitchens and shelters in Providence, Charlestown, Newport and Peace Dale. Additionally, several hundred pounds were delivered to the Jamestown Senior Meal Site and Pemberton Apartments.
Annually, approximately 150 individuals, from 3 to 75 years old, volunteer some of their time to plant, weed, cultivate and harvest the vegetables.
For eight years, Peter and Jean Ceppi have donated the use of the land for the farm. In addition, others donate tractors, tools, and equipment. For those interested, volunteer days are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. All are welcome and all labor is much appreciated.
Like the other farms in Jamestown, the Community Farm is committed to farming that is environmentally sensitive and that builds the soil. No commercial pesticides or herbicides are used to control bugs and weeds, and irrigation is done by the rain. Compost is created from residential leaves delivered to the farm by commercial landscapers. The farm is making this compost available to the public at a cost of $20 a cubic yard.
The Jamestown Community Farm is proving to be a learning experience for everyone involved. It is a continuous and dynamic experience that puts demands on minds and backs, but most of the time, seems like fun.
