Homebound elderly need friendly visitors

Child and Family has an immediate need for Friendly Visitor volunteers who visit the homebound elderly on a regular basis.

There are two retired businessmen who would like to talk about current affairs; one is in Tiverton, the other in Portsmouth. There is also a gentleman in Middletown who would like a chess partner, and two women in Newport who would like to share their memories. They have very few social contacts and would welcome a visit from someone who cares about them.

Volunteers might also chat, read, play cards or, in some cases, take them for a ride. The most important consideration is to be a good listener. Hours are flexible, but a one-year commitment is preferred. Before making a commitment, the volunteer is introduced to the elder so, together, they can decide if it looks like a good match. Call the Volunteer Office at 848-4210 for more information.
