Jayne C. Clarke, 81
Jayne C. Clarke, 81, formerly of Howland Avenue, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at the Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Newport. She was the wife of the late Arthur S. Clarke, Jr., who died in 1976.
Born in Jamestown on April 16, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Albert H. and
Bessie E. (Walker)
Chesebro. She was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Jamestown from 1945 until her retirement in 1984. It is believed she was the first woman to drive a postal delivery vehicle in this area. She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and a former member of the church choir and altar guild. She was a volunteer at the Beavertail Lighthouse Museum and the Jamestown Meal Site. She was an avid sports fan, especially basketball and baseball, and was the captain of the Rogers High School basketball team in 1945.
She is survived by her three children, a son Arthur S. Clarke, III and his wife Linda of Jamestown, a daughter Leslie W. Kurtz and her husband Edwin of Jamestown, a son Albert L. Clarke of Warwick and his companion Teresa Matteson; four grandchildren and one greatgranddaughter; a brother, Joseph W. Chesebro and his wife Angela of Wakefield; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Elizabeth C. Garlick.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 28, 2008 at 11 a.m. in St. Matthew's Church, 87 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown.
