Grow a sunflower this summer

The tradition continues. The Secret Garden this week has launched its 12th annual Sunflower Contest.

The Jamestown florist and garden center located at 12 Southwest Ave. is now giving away free sunflower plants to gardeners who would like to compete for the island's green-thumb bragging rights.

David Urban, who recently purchased the Secret Garden, said he will continue hosting the popular sunflower contest which was started by the shop's previous owners: Heidi Lessard, Holly Howard, and Helenna Fountain.

To participate in the contest, stop by the Secret Garden and pick up a free plant. Then give the plant tender loving care over the summer and return it to the Secret Garden on Saturday, Aug. 30, to be displayed and measured. Prizes will be awarded for the tallest plant and largest bloom in age categories, including children, adults and seniors.

This annual contest is the talk of the town all summer - islanders are often heard comparing their sunflower heights over coffee or while buying groceries at McQuade's.

Stop by the Secret Garden at 12 Southwest Ave. or call 423- 0050 for more information.
