Membership drive underway for island historical society

The Jamestown Historical Society (JHS) has kicked off a new membership drive with the goal of attracting new, island-based residents to the organization and its programs.

"JHS: We are History" is a multi-faceted campaign that will use advertising, direct mail and membership premiums to attract new members and help communicate the organization's goals.

The campaign was kicked off in the Jamestown Press with the first appearance of one of several "local history" profiles. In these ads, island residents offer glimpses into the past - colorful anecdotes that illustrate what life was like in Jamestown in bygone days. The JHS hopes to share stories of people, places and preservation in a way that will be of interest to islanders of all ages. Several wellknown islanders will be featured. Anyone interested in sharing their story should call Shawn Mayers at 423-9678.

The first 100 new members will receive a sterling silver windmill charm, regardless of participation level. New membership categories are: Student, $15; Individual, $25; Family, $40; Patron, $500; and the 1657 Society, $1000. Additional membership premiums are offered for participation at the Patron and 1657 Society levels.

"New JHS Patrons will receive an individual, lifetime membership," said Rosemary Enright, president of the JHS. "Additionally, at this level we will include a wonderful piece of local history produced by Jamestowners Nick Schaus and Barry Cook - a DVD entitled Narragansett Avenue: Then and Now."

The 1657 Society, referencing the year the island was acquired by the colonists, is an entirely new giving level. Participants at this level will receive all of the above, plus a hand-made, customizable, house plaque. "This hand-made plaque will certainly add character to historic homes - but it could also be imprinted with your house number, the name of your house - or anything else you like," Enright continued. Plaques will be individually produced by a local craftsman.

Membership forms are published at the bottom of each advertisement in the Jamestown Press, and can also be printed out on the JHS website, www.jamestownhistoricalsociety.org. To become a member, call 423-0784.
