Oliver Allaux takes top art award

Oliver Allaux of Jamestown, a senior at North Kingstown High School, has received the 2008 Art Scholarship from the Conanicut Island Art Association. This $3,000 scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who plan to pursue art in college.

The award is based on artistic merit and commitment as demonstrated by an essay and a portfolio, said Maryann England, scholarship chairwoman. "Oliver's passion for art was reflected both in his personal statement and his wonderful pieces. His strength in the use of line and medium was realized in each work that he submitted," England said. The award was announced at North Kingstown High School during the June 11 Senior Honors Night.

Also receiving awards were students from the island's Lawn Avenue and Melrose Schools. A student from each grade level received a CIAA scholarship to attend a class of their choosing at the Newport Art Museum School.

Scholarship recipients include: Emilio Kurz, grade 8; Olivia Wilcox, grade 7; Oksana Shein, grade 6; James Lowell, grade 5; Stella Hackman, grade 4; Kyle Rafferty, grade 3; Colbey Bush, grade 2; Savanna Olsen, grade 1 and Nolan Bush, kindergarten.
