Garden tour planned in Wickford

Historic Wickford will present "Wickford in Bloom," a waterfront garden tour of splendid private and public gardens on Saturday, July 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This is a self-guided walking tour "that brings one back to earlier days as one explores the collection of gardens in the village," according to Chairwoman Barbara Burgess.

Themes of the gardens vary- from a cottage-inspired garden to a formal British Garden, to small hidden gardens, to a richly landscaped garden with lush potted plants.

The 2008 garden tour will feature 15 gardens on the properties of eighteenth and nineteenth century homes and buildings- some on the picturesque harbor and others on the tree-lined village streets.

Adding a unique dimension of beauty and art to the tour this year, a local artist will on location painting in each garden.

Tickets are $15. Advance tickets may be purchased at The Book Garden, 99 Brown St., and at Wickford Flowers, 170 West Main St., both located in Wickford, and at Schartner Farms, Route 2 in Exeter.

Tickets may also be purchased the day of the tour at Updike Park, located in the village center at Brown and Main Streets in Wickford. The tour will be held on rain or shine.

All proceeds from the garden tour and raffle will benefit the Wickford Traffic Island Project, located on RI-Route 1A, established to enhance and beautify the gateway to historic Wickford Village.
