J/22 Summer racing begins July 6

This year's Fleet 12 summer racing series, hosted by the Conanicut Yacht Club, will have its first start on Sunday, July 6.

This one-design series is held on most Sunday afternoons in July and August. Sailing instructions and the specific schedule are posted on the CYC Web site at www.conanicutyachtclub.org.

The Fleet 12 summer series is open to all J/22's, and all are welcome. While it is sailed with spinnakers, the series is family-friendly, run on short courses in the lower bay, and is perhaps the most convenient racing option in the Newport area.

Michael and David Marshall will be back to defend their 2007 Fleet 12 championship, while at the same time preparing to take their boat "Bad News" to the J/22 Worlds in Rochester, N.Y. This year's J/22 Worlds are being hosted in late August by the home club of longtime CYC members and frequent Fleet 12 participants Cory and Mark Sertl, who are also expected to compete in that event.

Look for some new boats to join in the fun of this year's alwayscolorful Sunday afternoon J/22 racing fleet. Anyone interested in Fleet 12 sailing should visit the CYC website..
