Cal Ripken team does island proud

I want to take this time to acknowledge the Jamestown Cal Ripken 12-year old All-Stars for 2008. The team completed its appearance in the Cal Ripken 12- year old State Tournament at Slater Memorial Park in Pawtucket last week.

In our first game, Alex Burke pitched a masterpiece striking out 11 Darlington National (Pawtucket) players while walking only one. Jamestown was tied 1-1 going into the last inning but a tough Darlington team eked out two runs to win a heartbreaker.

In game two, Jamestown faced a talent-laden CLCF (Cranston) team. Johnny Lamont pitched hard to keep us in this game but an over-powering CLCF team finally prevailed 11-1.

Jamestown, however, continued its tradition of sportsmanship and fun and again received compliments from tournament officials. Despite all challenges, our kids kept their sense of humor, their fun attitude and their camaraderie for one another. Parents should be proud of these young men.

The team members are Danny Irwin, Matt Rafanelli, Tim Archer, Tim Howe, Jamie Mielde, John Lamont, Alex Burke, Eric Stroud, Drew MacIntyre, Charlie Keen, Graham Jamison, Gage DeVellis. Our team photo appears in this issue of the Jamestown Press.

I wish to thank Andy MacIntyre for his tremendous help in coaching and I'd like to thank President Steve Cirella for his support in our team preparation and also for his leadership throughout the entire season.

This was my last game as a tournament team manager and it could not have been with a better bunch of players. Jamestown should be proud of these young men. Thanks for the memories team! Tony Rafanelli Jamestown Baseball
