Schock Gallery paves the way for fine artists
      Since its grand opening on the festive night of the tree lighting last December, the Schock Gallery has unfurled the dream venue of five local artists. "We like to say that the Newport area's best gallery is found at the East Ferry waterfront," says David Schock, director of the cooperative gallery.

Volunteers needed for town bike path design panel
      Two vacancies exist on the Bike Path Design Committee. This new committee has been established by the Jamestown Town Council to facilitate the planning and construction of a designated bike path from the west side of the Jamestown Bridge to North Main Road and extending southerly into the village.

Auditions next month for JCT holiday production
      Auditions for the Jamestown Community Theatre production of "Miracle on 34th Street," are scheduled for Sunday and Monday, Aug. 17 and 18 at the Jamestown Golf Course building. Rehearsals will be on Sunday afternoons and Monday and Wednesday evenings and will begin right after Labor Day. Performances will be the weekends of Nov. 14 and 21.

Money available to those who study law
      The law firm of Correira & Iacono LLP has announced that they will give a $1,000 scholarship to a student who intends to pursue a legal career and will be either a high school senior this fall or is already in college. Applications will be accepted now through Sept. 12 and the winner of the scholarship will be announced shortly thereafter.

Race to benefit Doyle charities
      On Saturday, Aug. 16, the inaugural Bobby Doyle Summer Classic will kick off from Narragansett Middle School at 5 p.m. Runners and walkers will race along a 5-mile USTF course. The race is to honor the memory of Rhode Island's own "Marathon Man" Bobby Doyle, and to continue his tradition of community service.

North Road pumps don't work
      Public Works Director Steve Goslee told the Town Council at Monday's meeting that he has no confidence in the Department of Transportation (DOT) pumping station at Route 138 and North Main Road. "The pumps are still not working," he said.

Lower bay closed to boating this Saturday morning for annual swim
      The 32nd annual Save the Bay Swim will take place this Saturday, July 26, between Coasters Harbor Island in Newport and Potter Cove in Jamestown. The first wave of more than 450 swimmers will depart from Naval Station Newport at 8 a.m. and will swim the 1.7-mile length of the Newport Bridge. The first swimmers are expected to reach Potter's Cove just after 8:30 a.m.

Tennis women hold tourney
      The Jamestown Recreation Department Summer Tennis Doubles clinic recently held a round robin tournament. Sandi Langlais and Courtney Flaherty were the winners. Runners up were Joy Greer and Maureen McGuirl, who was a guest from the intermediate clinic.

Johnstone smokes J/22 fleet with back-to-back wins
      The fresh 15- to 18- knot sea breeze on Sunday marked a sharp contrast to the light air of opening day two weeks ago. Anticipating the fast conditions, Race Committee Art Dutton and Peter Schott set a course of Zp, 13P (twice around). Only six starters were on the line, perhaps in deference to the blustery conditions.

Mike Lyons entertains at East Ferry Sunday
      Summer Music in Jamestown continues on Sunday, July 27, with the return of Mike Lyons and the Blue Moon Orchestra, a 17 piece "big band." This group wowed audiences last summer and is back by popular demand. The concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the East Ferry Memorial Square.

      The Jamestown Teen Center is partnering with the Friends of the Jamestown Animal Shelter and Paws and Claws for the "Black Tie Doggie Ball" at the pavilion at Fort Getty on Saturday, Aug. 2. Volunteers are needed to help set up before the event and to feed and walk the dogs during the evening.

'Run' to be featured by book group
      The next book to be read by the book groups at the Jamestown library will be "Run" by Ann Patchett, on Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 1 p.m. There will be no evening discussion in August. Booklist gave "Run" a starred review. "The question of what makes a family is central to this luminous novel, Patchett's first since her award-winning Bel Canto, published in 2001.

     The return delivery crew of the yacht Aurora, which finished first in their division in the Newport to Bermuda Race, took the Press when they hooked a 45-pound mahi mahi somewhere off the Gulf Stream between Hamilton and Newport.

Star cast performs in Shakespeare in the park
      The Colonial Theatre is presenting Shakespeare's sunny and clever comedy "As You Like It" with 8 p.m. performances Tuesday through Sunday until Aug. 3. The stage will be in Westerly's Wilcox Park. Headlining the cast is actor David Birney, returning to the Colonial after a critically acclaimed performance as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice five years ago.

Planners continue work on new zoning ordinance
      The Planning Commission continued review of new zoning proposals for the Jamestown Village Special Development District at its July 16 meeting. The review included regulations set for thoroughfares, public frontages, site plans and affordable housing.

Rapport with kids key to success as police officer
      Jamestown Police officer Jason A. Hopkins believes it is important for police officers to establish good relationships with children. "It is so important to interact with kids," Hopkins said. "If police officers gain children's' respect and confidence when they are young, they will not be afraid to go to the police when it could be necessary later in life.

New town task force battles underage drinking
Coalition formed after lifeguard firing
      Recreation Director Bill Piva has formed a coalition to combat underage drinking after three Mackerel Cove lifeguards, who were accused of drinking while on duty, were fired. The coalition will host its first forum on Wednesday, July 30, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Recreation Center and the public is encouraged to attend.
