Race to benefit Doyle charities On Saturday, Aug. 16, the inaugural Bobby Doyle Summer Classic will kick off from Narragansett Middle School at 5 p.m. Runners and walkers will race along a 5-mile USTF course. The race is to honor the memory of Rhode Island's own "Marathon Man" Bobby Doyle, and to continue his tradition of community service. Doyle won the Ocean State Marathon seven times all the while serving his community as track and field coach at many local high schools. The benefactors of the race include two Bobby Doyle Scholarships, which will be awarded to male and female Rhode Island high school runners who display great morals and values in the classroom and community, and are dedicated to the sport of running. The race will also support the Bobby Doyle Youth Running Fund, specifically aimed to benefit local High School Track and Field programs. Lastly, the race creates the building blocks for the Bobby Doyle Cardiac Awareness Endowment Fund. This fund will be used to educate and raise awareness about the prevention of heart disease through a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise program to all Rhode Island residents. The race is open to runners and walkers for an early registration fee of $18, or $20 on race day. For more information, or to sign up visit www.needtorace.com. |
